Catherine Zeta-Jones wears a plunging neckline for style showdown with classy Carla Bruni-Sarkozy

Catherine Zeta-Jones was clearly not planning to be left in the shade at a dinner in New York last night where she was set to meet Europe's anointed style queen, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

The 38-year-old Hollywood star stepped out in a plunging purple gown which left little to the imagination for the style showdown with the wife of the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy.

And the gaping cut of the gown revealed a distinct lack of the famous Zeta-Jones undulating curves.

However, Mrs Sarkozy's elegant electric blue gown, with its high neckline, and bejewelled waistband won by a nose, adhering as it did to the old maxim, less is more.

Eyeful: Catherine showed off her voluptuous figure at the soiree

Paired with her trademark flats ballet pumps, it was yet another style triumph for Carla.

Catherine and husband Michael Douglas arrived at the Elie Wiesel Foundation For Humanity awards dinner in New York together at which President Sarkozy received the Humanitarian Award.

The star from the Welsh Valleys attended the event with husband Michael Douglas, 63.

Her most recent body blitz has seen her lose inches from her once substantial bust.

But Catherine has said she is 'not fanatical' about her fitness regime, and has hit out at Hollywood's obsession with 'super skinny women'.

The former West End dancer has said: 'My muscles have memory from the time I danced, and it's quick for me to get back in shape, but I'm not fanatical.'
